There was a time when a computer used to come with 200MB of storage capacity and that was considered to be huge. With the evolution of storage, the storage capacity has increased to a level where a very small device can store 1 TB and more. There are several storage components available today, namely disk drives, arrays, network fabric, and much more and they are the core of any infrastructure. The more storage it can offer the more useful it is.

The storage components are now smarter, slimmer, faster, and more effective. Let us discuss some of the major storage component types.

Disk Storage Components Storage devices

#SATA: When we talk about disk storage the first things that come to our mind is the hard disk of a computer system. Seagate technology has brought SATA hard disk, one of the best component with fast interface speed and more capacity. These hard drives can offer a storage capacity of 500GB, 750GB, and 1TB. The interface speed can be up to 3GBPS which means the data can be transferred at a speed of 102 Mbps. Seagate Technology’s barracuda 7200.11 desktop hard drives can run up to 750,000 hours and have a cache of 12MB. It uses the power of 12 watts when active and idle state respectively.

#SSD: A solid state drive is a flash-based storage device that allows persistent data storage with the use of integrated circuit assemblies as memory. Unlike traditional magnetic drives, SSDs have no moving mechanical parts. They run silently, have lower access time and latency, and are more resistant to physical shock. Compared to traditional HDDs, SSDs offer faster start-up time and faster data transfer rates ranging from 200 Mbps to 2500 Mbps. While SSDs are costlier than HDDs, the price of consumer-grade SSDs is declining at a very fast rate.

#SCSI: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is one more serial driver that can compete with SATA. The disk capacity can go up to  300GB and due to its 15,000 rpm the data transfer speed can be 300 Mbps and the interface speed is 3GBps.

#Tape Drive: A tape drive is a storage device that uses magnetic tapes to read and write data. It is primarily utilized in portable devices for offline storage as it is cost effective and provides prolonged stable storage opportunity. As it stores data on a tape sequentially. One must physically rewind the tape to access stored data. Tape drives can provide data transfer rates up to 140Mbps and the most recent commercially released IBM tape drive has a capacity of 10 TB
